I've discovered how to turn off ligatures in some of my other programs (like TextEdit and Nisus Writer Pro), but there seems to be no corresponding controls in FMP, and the "Help" feature provided no hits for likely keywords.

Richard I think you might find that's an OS X thing rather than a FileMaker thing ... although obviously some apps give an interface for adjusting it, which FM does not.

Thanks, Tim. I've sort of independently come around to the same line of thot, aided by advice from Rob Griffiths of Macworld magazine. I'm running OS 10.4.11, and the fixes he suggested to me WOULD have worked in the latest version of the OS 10.5.X that he's running, but I don't see the same thing he does when we look at the Fonts panel.

Having ligatures set to "on" appears to be the default setting in a couple of other programs I've tested as well (TextEdit and Nisus Writer Pro), and each of them gives you a way to turn the ligatures off, but only for selected text. And it's an extra step that you have to take AFTER you've generated the text, rather than something you can just set and forget for the app as a whole.

Since having ligatures "on" comes up independently in several different programs, I infer that it's something that was somehow set somewhere in the OS, but I'm damned if I can figure out where, or how to turn it off.

And FMP, unlike TextEdit and Nisus, doesn't give me app-specific independent control over it. 8^(
