We can make a guess on "what's happening" as follows:
It's likely that the fields in file OCCAM_1degree.nc were created using r8 
(double precision). The problem is that the NetCDF library is unable to 
convert to 32-bit.
Although this does not happen in our system at GFDL, this may happen on other 
system like yours. This is why you see only NaN
