Whatever you do don't set one side auto and force the other side, or vice-versa. Since the 802.3 spec doesn't define if a NIC has to still support autonegotiation features if it is in a forced state some vendors implement it and some don't (e.g. Cisco's devices randomly support it and then don't between IOS revs).
