There are a few basic things that are being missed out.  An IPS or IDS can and 
should consist of multiple sub systems to be effective - for example a host 
protection element, a network protection element and preferably a detection 
element to mop up the rest.  Don't expect a single unit to offer you the 
ultimate in network protection security, as it won't, contrary to the belief of 
many ill educated vendor salespeole out there who see security as a commodity.
