We should always mention Gentoo. Automatic updating which is designed to be safe to run against a production machine. The only time I've had problems with it keeping the machine stable was updating glibc and PAM at the same time. In addition, it is compiling the packages for your machines with configurable support for other programs (things like libraries, printing via cups, KDE frontends, etc). This tends to make packages better fit for your machine than a standard one-size-fits-all package.
