Islam and Pluralism
 *VHP's view of Hindu Rashtra and Darul Harb

The terms Darul Amn and Darul Harb are neither found in the Quran nor are
they authentic sayings of the Prophet. This artificial division was
introduced by Muslim jurists decades after the death of the Prophet to
identify nations that were hostile to Islam. Darul Harb thus refers to a
“nation at war” with an Islamic state, and Darul Amn is that nation which,
even while not being an Islamic state, allows Muslims the freedom to profess
and practice their religion as a matter of right. This makes India Darul Amn
without any doubt.

Unfortunately, some extremist theologians have exploited the concept of
Darul Harb to refer to all states and countries that are not under Islamic
rule though they may enjoy peaceful relations with the Muslims. This
position, which has been one of the major causes of disunity between Muslims
and non-Muslims, is not in consonance with the egalitarian ideology of the
Quran and must rejected as a supremacist interpretation of Islam. ...

But in the case of the VHP it is its own guilt that makes it suspect the
loyalty of the Muslims as a reaction to the communal hatred perpetrated by
some Hindu extremist outfits. The truth is that Muslims have always
considered themselves as equal citizens of India and therefore the question
of designating their own country as hostile to them does not arise. On the
contrary, it is the Hindutva groups who must prove their loyalty to our
constitution by issuing a ‘fatwa’ that India is not for the Hindus alone.

The idea of Hindu Rashtra must be given up and Hindu institutions should
condemn the anti-social activities of organisations such as the MNS, the Sri

The terror groups’ interpretation of the verses of Quran and definition of
Jihad are being fiercely disputed by Muslim communities all over the world
and Muslim Indians are at the forefront of such anti-terror campaign. Muslim
Indians’ role in challenging the terrorist group’s interpretation of Islamic
scriptures has been acknowledged and lauded internationally. The
condemnation of terrorists and statements and fatwas against them is
ceaseless. Muslim Indians have always been maintaining that what these
terror groups have been calling jihad is no jihad at all. In fact, Muslims
in India have coined the word “fasad” for their murderous doings. Every act
of these fasadis has been squarely condemned by Muslim Indians.

 Muslims of Mumbai have ostracized the Pakistani terrorists who attacked
their city on 26/11 and refused to bury them. Denial of a burial to the dead
is considered reprehensible in Islam and participating in the burial of even
a stranger is considered noble. Perhaps the Muslim Indian community has
risked the wrath of the world Muslim community for passing this harshest
castigation of the felled Muslims. The fury of Mumbai Muslims was too fierce

*The fundamental principles of religion and ethics are quite the same in
both Holy Books*

Islam, as enunciated in the holy Quran, is all for international
understanding and unity of mankind for the great purpose of realization of
human destiny. It does not recognize any barriers of racialism and all such
aggressive ‘isms’ which are affronts to human dignity and worth, as the holy
Quran regards men as the best creation.

The message of Islam is that they should all go back to the true faith which
may be designated Deen (religion), or Islam (surrender and submission to the
will of God). The root Slm in Arabic means "to be in peace, to be an
integral whole." From this root comes Islam, meaning to surrender to God’s
law and thus to be an integral whole. It asserts that religion does not
teach that man should hate man. The object of religion is to increase love
and unity among human beings by the recognition that "we are all the
children of the one and only God." This is Humanism.

The message of Islam, as depicted in the holy Quran is the "unity of mankind
under the fatherhood of God." It is opposed to all forms of grouping ––
racial, national, sectarian, or other. This then is the True Path, and for
this we ask God’s grace. The right path is essentially one of sympathy and
love for those human beings who are most in need of them – the orphan, the
slaves, the deprived, those who are poor or those who are lonely.

Having minutely gone through the Gita and the Quran, one may easily realize
that both these sacred volumes are so similar in their intrinsic nature that
they stand as a neck-vein to each other. Truly speaking, a true believer of
7th and 8th verses of the 4th chapter (Jnanayoga) of the Gita as well as the
48th verse of the Quranic Surah "Al-Maidah" will find no point of
dissimilarity between these holy volumes. Both of these scriptures intend to
establish religion on a firm footing for the protection of the virtuous, for
the destruction of the evil-doers and for restoring order and peace in the
society. The fundamental principles of religion and ethics are quite the
same, in all respects in both.

The similarity between the Gita and Quran extends on a larger scale, as most
of the verses of the Quran were preached under similar circumstances in

Support for the Taliban, as well as other militant groups, is coordinated by
operatives inside the shadowy S Wing of Pakistan’s Inter-Services
Intelligence. The Taliban’s widening campaign in southern Afghanistan is
made possible in part by direct support from operatives in Pakistan’s
military intelligence agency, despite Pakistani government promises to sever
ties with militant groups fighting in Afghanistan, according to American
government officials.



The support consists of money, military supplies and strategic planning
guidance to Taliban commanders who are gearing up to confront the
international force in Afghanistan that will soon include some 17,000
American reinforcements. Support for the Taliban, as well as other militant
groups, is coordinated by operatives inside the shadowy S Wing of Pakistan’s
spy service, the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, the officials
said. There is even evidence that ISI operatives meet regularly with Taliban
commanders to discuss whether to intensify or scale back violence before the
