Radical Islamism & Jihad *Tackling “Islamic” Terrorism in Af-Pak region <http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1323>*
One of the major problems is that the Americans, in search of quick policy options, are considering opening negotiations with a section of the Taliban described, for the sake of expediency, as ‘moderate’ Taliban or ‘good’ Taliban. Should this happen, this would amount to a strategic defeat for the US, as it would be negotiating with weaker adversaries from a position of weakness, having failed to militarily defeat them. Pakistan, by being truculent and duplicitous with its main benefactor, will have achieved its strategic ambitions. If that were to happen, India would be the biggest geo-strategic loser in the Hindu Kush region. -- *Vikram Sood* 1 Comments More...<http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1323> Islam and Politics *Setback for growing Islamic fundamentalism in South-East Asia <http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1321>* *Indonesian voters lose faith in Islamist parties* *DR TERRY LACEY* explains why he thinks that the people of Indonesia and the country won the election. He argues that the election, in which about 70 percent of 171 million voters participated was a triumph of democracy in this huge country. -- Early results from Thursday's parliamentary elections in majority-Muslim Indonesia have reaffirmed the appeal of broad-based secular parties over Islamic-oriented rivals.... Islamist politicians may have lost ground in the polls but their agenda hasn't gone away, says Sidney Jones, an analyst with the International Crisis Group in Jakarta. "You can't take this [election] as an indicator of where political Islam is in Indonesia. We've seen a mainstreaming into the nationalist parties, and we've seen an effort to reach out to conservative Muslim voters," she says. -- *Simon Montlake* *---* Despite efforts to project a modern image, opinion polls are showing sliding support for Muslim parties - and the grinding to a halt of years of apparently resurgent political Islam since dictator Suharto's fall in 1998. With growth in Southeast Asia's largest economy slowing, analysts say Islamic parties' moral message is being overshadowed by voters' more earthly concerns. "I don't care if the parties and candidates are religious. I'm choosing people to run a country, not a mosque," 45-year-old Jakarta shop assistant Mohammad told AFP. "You can't pray away a bad economy, unemployment, poverty and crime. -- *Arlina Arshad* 2 Comments More...<http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1321> Radical Islamism & Jihad *Pakistan The Next US Target: A Pakistani Islamic fundamentalist perspective <http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1322>* *The Khilafah, the only choice, not a utopian dream* With NWFP, Balochistan and Karachi all teetering at the edge, the US has a once in a generation opportunity to turn Pakistan into a balkanised hell hole.... Only the tried and trusted Islamic system of the Khilafah (Caliphate) can succeed in the Muslim world. A coherent effort at re-establishing the Khilafah is now the urgent requirement and is gaining momentum. According to an opinion poll carried out by the University of Maryland, 74% of Pakistanis support the establishment of a unified Khilafah in the Muslim world, the establishment of such an entity is therefore not a question of if, but when.... Many cite the Khilafah as a utopian dream, yet those in the know are not so sure. A US government intelligence study by the National Intelligence Council in 2004 called “Mapping the Global Future” presented as one future scenario the rise of a new pan-national Caliphate. Thomas Ricks the Washington Post’s senior Pentagon correspondent in his book “Fiasco” says there is precedent for the emergence of a unifying figure in the Muslim world, a modern day Saladin, someone who can revive the region through combining popular support with huge oil revenues. A real “nightmare scenario” for the western world as Richard Nixon once described it in his book 1999. -- *DAILY.PK* 4 Comments More..<http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1322> -- Syed M.
