Islam and Politics *Fathers, sons and Kashmiri politics <http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1424>*
Political actors have proved more successful in bringing about the engagement of the secessionists with the political system, witness the PDP’s successes in recruiting the Jamaat-e-Islami vote in southern Kashmir during last year’s Assembly elections or the relentless pressures which compelled Sajjad Lone to contest in Baramulla. Like their fathers before them, Jammu and Kashmir politicians are being compelled to learn that lions and goats must co-exist. New Delhi must support the transformational effect of democracy by engaging Jammu and Kashmir’s elected politicians on the issues of identity and agency for which the secessionists have so far been allowed to be the sole spokespersons. During his first term in office, Prime Minister Singh initiated the Round Table Dialogue process, which involved a wide section of opinion in Jammu and Kashmir. Among other things, the dialogue led to the setting up of a working group chaired by the retired Supreme Court judge, Saghir Ahmed, to discuss the shape of Jammu and Kashmir’s future. Justice Ahmed’s group must now be pushed to complete its work — and its findings used as the foundation for an inclusive dialogue in which both pro-India and secessionist political groupings are invited to participate. -- *Praveen Swami* More...<http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1424> Current affairs *India-Pakistan peace process hinges on decisions in Lahore High Court <http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1423>* Observers are of the view that there is a strong possibility of the three–judge Bench of the Lahore High Court declaring illegal the detention of *Hafiz Saeed, leader of the Jamat-ud-Dawa*. In a far corner of the bustling Lahore High Court, a stately red-brick colonial-era building, a three-judge Bench is hearing a case whose outcome could be one determinant of whether, and how soon, the re-elected Congress-led government in New Delhi is willing to restart the peace process with Pakistan, frozen since the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. … With all this, it appears that the “action” India wants Pakistan to take in the Mumbai case may take at least months if not years, with unpredictable results. Meanwhile, Pakistan believes international pressure can force New Delhi back into the peace process. …Either way, India’s newly elected government will soon need to decide what do about its “paused” relations with Pakistan. -- *Nirupama Subramanian* More..<http://www.newageislam.org/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1423> -- Syed M.
