The Reservoir Geophysics Group at the Heriot-Watt Institute of Petroleum Engineering is looking for both PhD students and postdoctoral research associates to fill positions beginning in summer/autumn 2003. PhD students in 4D (time-lapse) seismic We have four vacancies for PhD students in the area of 4D seismic analysis. You will join our lively team working on quantitative time-lapse seismic research funded by companies from the hydrocarbon industry. You should have a high quality first degree in either Geophysics, Geology, Physics, Applied Mathematics or Reservoir Engineering, and are expected to possess sound knowledge and experience in at least three of the following areas: seismic data processing, seismic interpretation, mathematics, computing, reservoir modeling, history matching, and petrophysics. Good communication skills, both written and spoken are essential for this work. A Master's degree or relevant experience in the hydrocarbon industry is desirable but is not a necessity. All three-year studentships are fully funded, covering tuition fees, maintenance, and travel and expenses. During the course of your studentship you will be expected to conduct your chosen research project, give talks at sponsors' meetings and also at international conferences. If necessary, in the first year of the PhD degree, training will be given in the principles of reservoir evaluation and management, seismic 4D analysis, and engineering through taught classes. Postdoctoral researcher in 4D (time-lapse) seismic This post is for two years in the first instance, but may be extended by a further year. You are expected to pursue individual research projects in the subject of 4D seismic as defined by our research programme and later to become involved in team projects. You will undertake projects in the areas of 4D processing and interpretation. Additional duties will include assisting the principal investigator with supervision of students and some administrative responsibilities. You should possess a good first degree and a PhD in geophysics. Equivalent experience in the seismic industry will also be considered. You are expected to be computer-literate and mathematically competent. Working knowledge of industry-standard software packages will be an advantage. Excellent communication skills both written and spoken, together with a good track record of publications are essential for this work. Postdoctoral researcher in seismic fracture characterization This post is initially for a period of one year. You will be responsible for developing a research project in the area of time-lapse seismic and fracture characterization. You should have a good first degree and possess a PhD in geophysics or equivalent experience working in the seismic industry. You are expected to be computer-literate and mathematically competent. You will undertake projects in the areas of seismic processing and interpretation, attributes analysis, data integration and reservoir characterization with a focus on fractures and seismic anisotropy. Working knowledge of industry-standard software packages will be an advantage. Excellent communication skills both written and spoken, together with a good track record of publications are essential for this work.
