you may also search in the archives of the baidarka list. The idea is to
have a "sleeve" of deck or trim material sewn around a tubular rim
(polyethylene tubing in my case) + cordura sleeve. The sleeve will have a
couple inches hanging looking in section like a "P", where the rounded part
is the rim. The leg of the P will then be sewn on the deck material. leaving
the rim to "float" a bit. The purpose is to:
1) allow enough space for sea sock AND spray skirt
2) allow for a non-fully rigid cockpit rim, which would be in need of
hinging features or others.
Make sure you waterproof the stitches with some water sealant. My recipe is
a neoprene glue diluted with acetone, brushed on threads from inside.
