I thought that professional was about making an income from what you are
doing which has everything to do with 'group acceptance', at least with
a consumer.

Actually, critical review has everything to do with experience and
knowledge. This is especially true when you get into the esoterica of
construction- I have no idea whether a particular linear accelerator is
well designed or constructed as I don't know the requirements nor the
experience with the mechanism. As I get more experience with a variety
of materials I learn quite a bit more about evaluating and judging
craftsmanship. Most people have no idea in my experience.

As with most generalizations, this has small elements of truth but much
to argue with. The guild system did maintain standards and still do in
the union system here in the states. It was exclusionary which is
always a problem. It did serve to communicate methods and techniques
which eliminated the 'reinvention of the wheel'. It was generally a
more stringent training than exists now, especially in Japan.
I have no idea whether M. or D. were guild members, but more than likely
they were as access to materials and tools were limited to guild
members.

definitely not potential, but training. I would generally not go to a
surgeon to get a ditch dug for my cesspool. It would probably take far
too long and not be deep enough.

I enjoyed your thoughts and there are many important things you are
bringing up, but as usual, generalizations are slippery ground.
