Jon presented a brief overview of the purpose of Steering Committee, as
envisioned by Pine Tree Folk School. The Steering Committee can have as
big a role in the direction and governance of the HelpNet project as it is
willing to take on. It is possible for HelpNet to eventually be spun off
as a freestanding organization. For now, PTFS is providing administrative
support.
Jon presented information on HelpNet's finances (Profit and Loss statement
for 2001, through August 2). Briefly, PTFS received a $5000 grant from the
Maine Community Foundation in December to support HelpNet's
development. In calendar year 2001, Helpnet has had income of $5,023.74,
and expenses of $7,685.19, for a net operating loss of $2,661.45, not
including the $5,000 grant. These figures only represent direct costs --
they do not include indirect administrative costs, which have been covered
by PTFS.

Roxanne offered to work on a HelpNet brochure, which could be distributed
to potential members. There was discussion of Jon's role. Paul observed
that if Jon acts as an intermediary between members and providers of
various technical services, it helps make it safer for the members to ask
questions.
The group decided it was a priority to build HelpNet's financial base, to
ensure that the project is sustainable. Jon, Ilze and Roxanne volunteered
to form a financial subcommittee to begin working on this question, and
possibly begin developing a business plan. Items that are open for
examination include: current and potential members base, dues and fees
structures and sliding scales, compensation for employees/consultants, etc.
The first meeting of the financial group is this Wednesday, August 23,
12:00 at the Peace and Justice Cdenter. All are welcome to attend and join in.
