I've been hearing and reading about ASP's (Application Service Providers)
for some time, and it has seemed like something I should learn more
about. (An ASP is an outfit that provides a service to you over the
Internet, rather than your running it on your own computer.)
Now CompassPoint has published A 56-page guide, "The eNonprofit: A Guide to
ASPs,
Internet Services, and Online Software," to help Nonprofits with ASPs and
other Internet tools. You can buy the print version, but it's available
for free download from <www.compasspoint.org/enonprofit>.
I've started reading it, and it's excellent. While the topic sounds
intimidating, the Guide is written fro folks like us. To quote the
Introduction,
"Many of us are already using ASPs. No, ASPs aren't secretly
signing you up for their services (or I hope they're not), but if you're
using Topica for an email newsletter (or email listserv) or posting your
volunteer opportunities on volunteer-match.org, you're using an ASP. If
you're reading Yahoo Mail via the Web, you're using an ASP. Many of us
picture ASPs as only very complex services or traditional software services
(like word processing or accounting) via the Web, but, as you will see,
they can be very simple, but effective, and the services they offer range
widely."
The first chapter offers "10 Quick and Easy ASP's You Can Use Today,"
including some I'd never heard of. I recommend that folks check this out.
