Well, it's virus alert time again. Although the "klez" virus, which has
several variants, has been around since late last year, it's started
appearing with increasing frequency. I've probably gotten 5 copies of it
in the last 2 days. This is a fairly sophisticated mass mailing
virus. There isdetailed info, and a removal tool, at www.symantec.com.
In addition to sending itself to addresses in the Windows address book,
Klez seeks to infect all hard drives, including network shared drives. It
may try to delete your files on dates in March and September. It also tries
to "spoof" addresses. According to Symantec's info:
"Some variants of this worm use a technique known as "spoofing."
If it does this, it chooses at random an address that it finds on an
infected computer as the "From:" address that it uses when it performs its
mass-mailing routine. Numerous cases have been reported in which users of
uninfected computers receive complaints that they have sent an infected
message to someone else."
Klez also exploits a known vulnerability in Outlook Express which can let
it run when you open or even preview the message. Microsoft has had a patch
available that fixes this problem for more than a year, so if you haven't
been running Windows Update and installing the "critical updates," this is
another reminder to do so.
I decided to send this message out to you all after getting a phone call
from my brother, an Indiana Civil Liberties Union attorney. His computer
sent Klez infected E-mails all across the country, including to several
Federal judges. He was not a happy camper.
