For folks interested in exploring alternatives to Microsoft, Beonex
Communicator is a very nice open source (and free), full-featured Web
browser package. It is based on the "Mozilla" core, which is the open
source guts of the current version of Netscape (Netscape 6). But since
Netscape is now owned by AOL-Time Warner, Netscape 6 is clogged up with all
sorts of junk. Beonex is much cleaner.
The Beonex Communicator package includes Navigator (the Web browser), a
mail and newsgroup program, Chatzilla (an IRC chat program), and Composer,
a decent web page editor. You can get the 9 Mb download at:
<http://www.beonex.com/communicator/>
If you're used Netscape, especially Netscape 6, the program's interface
will look very familiar. But unlike Netscape 4.x, Beonex is up to date and
complaint with html standards.
We haven't really had much discussion of the open source movement within
HelpNet. If other folks are interested, it's an area I would like to explore.
