I have a laptop - also four years old, also Win98. I don't think I'm having
the problems you are, but over the past year I have noticed that the
computer has become almost intolerably slow about starting, opening
programs, and opening documents (usually works fine within an open file).

A few months ago, my modem was fried by lightening. Since replacing it, I
have frequent lockups, and it is INTERMINABLY slow (sometimes as much as a
full minute to download a single simple text email -which adds up when you
have 75 emails to download!) - but I am assuming those problems are related
to the discount modem I bought. The lockups occur only when the modem is
connecting or disconnecting.

I would be interested if what you say about registry distruction is true. I
seem to be beginning to notice a slowdown on my work computer as well -
also Win98 and about four years old - but it is not nearly as dramatic as
what is happening on my laptop.

I installed Norton SystemWorks on the laptop. It found a bunch of errors
and fixed all but two of them (it always says the remaining two are fixed,
but then they are there the second I run the system check again - finally
three months ago one of them seems to have stayed fixed but there is still
one that persists). It did not seem to make any difference with the
slowdowns, and neither did defragmenting. I have already posted questions
on the defragmenting problems I was having ("starting over, disk contents
have changed" - even when nothing but the bare minimum is running on the
computer, per suggestions from Jon).

Does anyone know of a good site like Woody's Office Portal that answers
questions about Windows?

Subject: [folkschool-list] Win98 chronic ailment

Please let me know if this has already come up - I have a laptop now about
4 years old, and it's been acting up - generally problems when starting,
random restarts, screen locks, inaccessible programs - sounds like a
problem. Scouting for diagnosis and solutions about a month ago on Campus,
general sense that it's software. I bought Norton toolkit (I think that's
what it's called) and ran various diagnostics and fixes, and it ran for a
month, now acting again, fixed again, now running ... Advice I got:
probably needs complete system re-install, involving copying all data files
and reinstalling all programs. Sounds like a hassle! Maybe Norton's fixes
are catching up to this? Apparently the registry self-destructs over time
with Win98. Other advice: replace my old Zip backup with writable CDs
before the backup project. Anyone else experience this?
