The last time I was in Cyberdata, I saw a bunch of laptop pieces with your name on them spread across the workbench. Bill told me he was struggling to recover data from your scrambled hard drive. I'm glad it had a more or less happy ending. And it's a good example of why having some sort of backup is so important.
Recent events with a couple of HelpNet members have led me to think that maybe I haven't stressed enough that it's important not only to make backups, but to:
(1) check them to be sure that you're actually backing up what you think you are. I'v found, for instsance, that the Windows 2000 Backup program, which generally does a good of running scheduled backups, sometimes just stops doing them for no reason that I can figure out.
(2) know how to restore them if you need to. Unfortunately, most Windows backup programs make restoring backups a lot more confusing than creating them.
Perhaps we could do a future workshop on this if there's enough interest.

Late last year I began looking for backup storage options, and posted a note to this list. Well, breathe easily, no essential data was lost in the ensuing saga. Two points to remember: any backup is preferable to no backup or perfect backup; and, that old truism, it's not a matter of whether, but when, your system will crash.
