Hi Felix,
What might be interesting for you to watch is this:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2950949730059754521
(or as a download http://ftp.squeak.org/Media/AlanKay/ )
It's a bit dated (it's from 1997), but nevertheless interesting.
As for ARPA and Xerox, these books have more (though of course they
take an outsiders
perspective that might not be in sync witht the people who actually
did the work):
The Dream Machine: J.C.R. Licklider and the Revolution That Made
Computing Personal

Dealers of Lightning: Xerox Parc and the Dawn of the Computer Age

Hi,
For those (like me) new and/or just interested, I'd like to mention
and
shortly summarize (as far as I got, I'm suffering impatience) the

I'm reading right now:
"The Power of the Context"
http://vpri.org/pdf/draper_RN-2004-001.pdf
It is worth to read for its insight into what research was like and
about at ARPA / PARC, and how it was funded in a different way from
(most) current research projects. It also will help anybody wishing
to
"dig deeper", as it gives a list of some of the most remarkable people
whose (sometimes unfinished) ideas are worth to explore and continue.
