Casey,
Wow, thank you! Yes, the intimate mixture of explanatory
text, live code, and good illustrations is very much needed.
Be sure to see Takashi YAMAMIYA's Chalkboard, where you can
create new active essays: http://tinlizzie.org/chalkboard/#Home
I did several versions of Richard Dawkins' program to evolve
the sentence "Me thinks it is like a weasel." These were in
HyperCard, Glyphic Codeworks, and Etoys.
Many Etoys projects are one-page active essays. See
http://www.squeakland.org/showcase/featured/
The Media Lab at MIT has done quite a few active essays.
Many are in StarLogo, a highly parallel language.

I really like the stuff Ted Kaehler is doing. The text field spec
totally blew my mind.
I'd like to learn everything I can about active essays. I have an
itch to try my hand at it as a sort of art project, and I've already
started something up. Is there anything in particular that I should
look at beyond the first couple pages of google results?
