If you insist on patching the older 2.4.10 or 2.4.9, you'll need to look at the 5 commits listed in comment 33. To test that you have done so correctly, use *both* the test program in comment 10, and the embolden mode in ftview (press "2"), and under both 32-bit and 64-bit. (the pdf backend of cairo checks one thing, the ftview's embolden mode checks another, and some of the relevant code behaves differently under 32-bit vs 64-bit mode).
