I guess the trick may be something like this: $ fc-match -s Cantarell,sans:lang=hi Lohit-Devanagari.ttf: "Lohit Devanagari" "Regular" FreeSans.ttf: "FreeSans" "нормален" Cantarell-Regular.otf: "Cantarell" "Regular" ... Best font in this query is Lohit though, Lohit doesn't have ASCIIs. so falling back to FreeSans. FreeSans has both Devanagari scripts and ASCIIs. so keep using it.
