I'd rather not make any incompatible changes, but if we can figured out 
some way to make the syntax easier to understand, I'm all for it.

In particular, I'm currently in favor of a simplified face alias syntax:

alias "times" prefer "times new roman" accept "charter";

I think this is easier to understand than the current syntax for this very 
common case.

I'll likely start with the XFree86 technical conference paper and track 
the actual code.  It describes the complete format in some detail.

I'll also be converting that to HTML in the near future and adding it to my
xfree86 web page (http://xfree86.org/~keithp/talks).
