AFAIK GIMP doesn't use XftConfig/XFT.
It seems your video card supports anti-aliasing (AA)/RENDER ext., and
Kfontinst installed fonts to be availble via Xft.
So, most likely, you should ask GIMP developers when they are going to
support AA.

Have you checked what "dpi" settings your X server has?
I have different *complain* about Opera - it's fonts are *too big* in
Opera5/Linux. Konqueror has *right size* for all fonts.
So, it seems, Opera is doing some tweaking with fonts, but I have no idea
what they are trying to express with this.

| I installed Corel Photopaint wich works fine.

check /etc/X11/XftConfig
