I'm not sure how good their autohinting is.  I think that the best
solution would be to start with the generated hints, and then retouch
them by hand where necessary.

Yes.  But you should have both a ``postscript'' and a ``unicode''
mapping, so that the same encoding file can work with both Type 1 and
TTF fonts.
