If those fonts.dir/fonts.scale/fonts.alias are really needed, they should be generated automatically. Unfortunately in order to do that, mkfontdir/ttmkfdir, etc. need to do a better job. For example, I have to add new encodings (GB2312, BIG5, etc.) after mkfontdir/ttmkfdir. Ideally, only two configuration files are needed by end user: 1. A file listing font directories; 2. A file listing aliases. Anything else should be application specific.
