Please note that FreeType is not produced by the XFree86 team.
FreeType is a separate library that XFree86 uses. For more info on

I do see embbedded bitmaps in Japanese fonts such as MS-Mincho
and HG-Gothic and they appear to me (non-Japanese reader) to
be quite attractive compared to the outline rendered glyphs from
the same fonts.
