Is there a good reason not to use the .so version of freetype for this 
module?  I believe freetype should be treated as a system library, much as 
libc is today.  This could include building a thunk layer like the current 
xf86_ansic.h to ensure portability.

The alternative is to have two copies of this library loaded on every 
system.
