Dear Ian,

XFree86 uses the ISO 8859-1 (``Latin-1'') character set for
Western-European languages, which is derived from DEC Multilingual.
For historical reasons, HP uses the HP ROMAN-8 character set.

While it would be easy to add ROMAN-8 support to XFree86, XFree86 does
not currently support the ROMAN-8 character set, which we believe to
be obsolete.  The simplest workaround would be to add aliases for ISO
8859-1 fonts to the ROMAN-8 names; please see the mkfontdir(1)
manpage.  You should be aware that doing this will break accented
characgters.
