I've built and tagged RC2 for fontconfig. The bits are available at:

Major changes:

fontconfig:

The weird first/not-first hack for checking the font vs the
pattern is gone. 'test' elements can now include a 'target' which
can specify 'pattern' in the 'font'. An example of this
is in the default configuration for artificial slanting of fonts
which don't provide an italic or oblique varient.

        BSD install requires target filename

fontconfig should be clean when run under valgrind.

Edit elements can now specify 'strong' binding to permit family
names which override a language specification in the pattern.

FcPatternEqual short circuits tests when given matching pointers

fontconfig.man updated to match current API. It should be
        complete and accurate.

fonts.conf and fonts.dtd are always installed now; local changes
belong in /etc/fonts/local.conf which fonts.conf loads.

Should fonts.conf load fonts from /usr/local/share/fonts?

New orthographies for many languages built. Still missing 17
of the 139 languages named in ISO 639-1:

Any help here would be greatly appreciated; we're very close to a
"complete" set. The most pressing here are probably Malay, Punjabi,
        Pashto and Zhuang.

Owen found that _XftCloseDisplay was corrupting the global list

Compute the charset at open time for patterns which don't provide
one. This may be slow for large fonts, but the alternative is that
        Unicode mapping is completely disabled.

        No changes since RC1
