I'd say that the question of whether you want to use the embedded bitmaps is essentially the same as to whether you want to use anti-aliasing. Well hinted Western fonts are essentially equivalent to embedded bitmaps. so if you like the appearance of non-AA text, you'd probably like it for all fonts. > I guess I will have to wait till xft2 is out and about. Xft version 2 is nearly shipping; it's part of fcpackage, a collection of bits needed to use fontconfig on top of an existing X installation. Gnome2 CVS has already cut over to Xft2; RH (NULL) uses Xft2 and Chris Blizzard is building Mozilla with Xft2. There are patches for Qt, but TrollTech hasn't yet made a version of their toolkit with Xft2 support public.
