On

  http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/files/mkfontscale-20030605.tar.gz

you will find a version of mkfontscale which in theory should subsume
the functionality of mkfontdir. It should be possible to replace
mkfontdir with a script that does

  #!/bin/sh
  mkfontscale -b -s -l "$@"

and not have anyone notice any change (except that it's slightly faster).

Please do test. I want to kill mkfontdir soon.

                                        Juliusz
