I've had the problem a bit myself, but then at smaller sizes. It seems that 
fonts like times new roman at say 10 points render horribly at non-square 
dpi's. Especially with something like 81x82 (caused by rounding on a square 
pixel display). Also certain dpi's work probably better than others. I've not 
researched this well though, but I believe Xfree can be improved a lot in 
this area.
