I've just upgraded the maint branch to Batik 1.5b4. I've also added some (!) support for spans when the SVG is rendered with strokeSVGText=false. Before the text came out on one line even if there were dy or y attributes on the span. This was an attempt to fulfill a requirement (reduce pdf size) here at work, but I took it primarily as an education task for myself to get used to Batik. There are still things that don't work with strokeSVGText=false.
Anyway, Keiron, I didn't submit the same jar you uploaded for the redesign. Mine only includes the necessary classes but contains debug information which I missed a few times.
