The changes do not affect many classes, so one obvious possibility is that I was too focused on that area, and completely ignored other parts. In spite of adding the span-value to the BlockSequence, and 'faking' the span change, it produces weird effects. Checking the debug-log, I only get span changes from EN_NONE to EN_NONE (= NOT_SET in the LayoutContext), so column-balancing is not yet triggered, and something is definitely wrong with the BPD updates.
