You know the code better than I do - and yes - your solution is more elegant.
I have tested this locally and all three tools (Acrobat Prefligt, VeraPDF and
PAC) confirm a correct PDF/A-2a and PDF/UA-1.
Attached is the XMP meta XML from the PDF that was created with the commit
d2e25108afcda:
