I've had the same thoughts. I know of no product that
helps.

I've spent many hours writing my own emacs macros that
work great for my particular DTDs.

Here are the feature I find indespensible:

  An editor key to reindent my code, especially when
I'm editing lists in XSL-FO.

  My ">" key understands many tags like <ol> and <ul>
and automatically inserts the following code after I
have typed "<ol". It automatically positions me after
the "<li>" with the proper indentiation.

  <ol>
    <li></li>
  </ol>

  My return key checks to see if the last tag on the
line was a "</li>" and if so, automatically inserts a
"<li></li>" on the next line (with the proper
indentation of course) and positions me again
immediately after the "<li>".

These keys have similar capabilities for tags like
<fo:list>.

 Unfortunately, I have not documented anything since I
did not anticipate anyone else using my .emacs file.
