Thanks. To be honest though, what I was imagining was that you could set a parameter for FOP when generating a document that said 'give me line numbers on this document' and then the FOP code itself would have to determine how to do this within the document flow. I don't know how that needs to relate to the xsl:fo specification itself.

I guess I will see if this is possible through writing an extension.

This is an action that cannot be performed via an XSLT, as the document must first be flowed correctly for display, in order to know what line number should be placed where.

Nope, xsl-fo Recommendation doesn't support such stuff, it's well-known requirement for next version. It could be done probably by some extension though.
