I think I'll use my own function to clean our users' input but this
project looks like being quite interesting.
Anyway, they choose really funny acronyms !

You should probably take a look at jakarta POI
http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/index.html
The claim to be able to read/write Word and other MS proprietary
file formats.
BTW the peculiarities of Word files vary considerably between
versions.
