You got it J. I checked the Solaris graphics files and they were messed up.
A quick reinstall of some Solaris packages and all works beautifully. Thanks

The AWT renderer relies on the local graphic subsystem for some
calculations.

This is an outdated release known to have some really inconvenient bugs.
You should upgrade.
