I'd like to add that tabs are considered whitespace in XML. Tabs as in Word can't be used in XSL-FO.
Well, the fact that tabs are white-space is only relevant for validation. Tabs are passed through to the application unchanged. It's the XSLFO spec which guides how tabs should handled in FOP.
