So, in general, I was looking for a way to limit the size of some content block and have anything which exceeds the size continue in another non-consecutive area. Kinda like linking together 2 display regions and fixing the size.
Sounds like you're trying to do something similar to newspaper columns. Some time ago, I posted this (hope it helps!):
