FOP is not conformant here, putting space unconditionally even at the start of a reference area (table cells create reference areas), which violates the spec. There is no work around nor an intention to fix this in the near future. I think there are already multiple entries in Buxzilla for this and related issues.

What can I do further to get this problem solved?
The style sheets can be hacked to avoid defining spaces
at the beginning of page sequences, table cells and so on,
but they'll get kind of ugly in the process.
