I think you should consider if that is worth "the trouble".
I don't think you would earn that much in performance.
The heaviest part of FOP I think is the XSL-FO interpreter and processor, and this you will need >anyway to transform your XSL-FO documents.
I'm not talking about performance. I just want to keep the size of my application as small as possible.
