Well a typical telephone bill has several transactions, with each transaction there are several columns of data, e.g. time of call, phone number dialed, call length, and cost. At the bottom of each page and then the bottom of the list of transactions totals are displayed.

Whilst it is possible to calculate a running total in XSLT, it is not possible to place these totals precisely as the last row before a page break. Markers can be used to retrieve totals in static content but this is usually a little below the end of the table containing transactions, and a long way below the last transaction on the last page. Depending on the complexity of the statement, XSL-FO can fall a long way short of generating the desired output.

Statements is one type of document that my company struggles to sell to our customers. Instead we prefer applications where the output is like a letter than flows without being hindered by totals and other meta data.
