Does fop use the X11 font ?
No.
In fop configuration it says that fop need X11 to be installed.
Thats right, or if you have Java 1.4 you can run with the -headless option.
If not, which font does fop is using ?
Depends on what you specified in font-family property? Default is Helvetica. Definition of this is the Adobe Helvetica.
If yes why the fop servlet doesn't found the cyrillic char and display "####" ?
This means the font you are using via font-family doesnt have a glyph for the requested code point.
I don't want to use special font and embed it in the pdf. Base font should be enough. Russian pdf created with Acrobat are well displayed on the client computer, so I should be able to use standard font with fop.
I dont think any of the 14 base Adobe fonts have glyphs for all the languages you need. I think for russian you will need to specify a different font to the other languages and embed it into the PDF.
