Thanks a lot for your answer ... I was able to make it work with the svg 
examples of FOP, but not with mine yet...
I will continue to work and this and let you know ...

FOP 0.20.5 doesn't recognize SVGZ for an fo:external-graphic.

What you can try, though, is to use a little SVG wrapper inside an
fo:instream-foreign-object where you reference the external SVG file
using an "image" element. Should work but I haven't tried. This way the
external SVG is loaded by Batik and not by FOP.
