I don't understand what you mean by "before tool". You would use the cartridge as part of a tool chain. It is a composite component, containing of several components that it uses. Also the UML profile and template code can be understood as artifacts of the Hibernate Cartrdige component. The cartridge uses also another cartridge (JavaBasic), which itself can be understood as component.
