I don't understand why there is a performance bottleneck, since we don't do
much logging and I think we normally use the 'if isDebugEnabled' idiom.

I agree that lack of parameterized logging is a major drawback for commons
logging. I think we have chosen commons logging because most other
frameworks use it, such as Spring.

I think there is a benefit of using a logging facade, to be able to switch
implementation. We could consider changing to SLF4J,
