John,
Please try to configure your proxy settings in the Java Web Start
Application Manager:
File/Preferences/General/Proxies..
Let me know if that makes a difference.

Moreover,
In the File/Preferences/Advanced Tab you can specify a Log file.
Enable it and check if there is something helpful in the log...

Subject: [Forum] web start problems

I am having problems using the web start functionality of
Theodore. At home, everything works fine. But at work, using the
same computer, it will not come up. When I start it, it hangs at
"checking for latest version".

I use a proxy server at work, so that is probably my problem,
but I *was* able to launch the old beta Theodore from web start
when it was hosted on another site.

I'm running on Mac OSX 10.2.3, Java web start 1.0.1, JDK 1.3.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
john
