We have done that in a 3 year project, called sicas, the client is a ligthweigth XUL package running as a signed applet on a web page , the server side is a cluster of BEA WebLogic servers, the experience from our own customers is that the application is years beyond actual web technologies, we are now discarding anything jsp / struts / tags based in our new designs, it's nonsense having the know-how on this technologies, so, go for it and invest on the effort, it finally pays and shines.
